THE ORAL
POTENTIAL METER
What is the Oral Potential Meter?
The Oral Potential Meter is an electronic device used to measure micro-electrical currents in teeth that have fillings with metal in them or crowns of any type, including composite materials and porcelain crowns. Measurements can also be taken of tattoos in the gums.
The device has two small metal probes. One probe is placed on the filling or crown and the other is placed on the gum just below the filling or crown. A measurement of electro-chemical potential difference/electrical conductivity of the restoration or crown is taken and written down on a tooth chart..
The electrical measurements provide a variety of information. With ideal health, the electrical readings are as low as possible. Any reading above 10 millivolts would require further investigation by a dentist. For instance, if one has a cavity, the Oral Potential Meter would produce a high electrical reading. When measuring a crown, a high reading could mean one of the following: there is tooth decay beneath the crown; there is a silver filling beneath the crown that is reacting with a dissimilar metal in the crown thereby creating excessive electrical current (the electrical current itself in this case can create decay in the tooth beneath the crown); the composition of the metal filling or crown is not compatible with the body. In any case, a high electrical reading would indicate the necessity of further investigation by a dentist more familiar with these concerns.
According to Hal Huggins, DDS, it is necessary to measure every
tooth for electrical activity so that the patient can start by removing the
amalgam with the highest electrical reading. This protocol achieves the best
results and makes sense; often times, highly electrical fillings can cause
surrounding teeth to have higher readings as well. Therefore, it is imperative
that accurate measurements of all teeth are taken.
What other considerations are there?
"I had a mouth full of amalgam fillings from the time I was twelve years old. About ten years ago I had them removed. I also have numerous crowns. I thought that all of the amalgam was gone from my mouth. Recently, though, I visited an alternative dentist who measured my crowns with the Oral Potential Meter. He found that my four side-by-side crowns emitted high readings: 140 MV, 120 MV, 100 MV, 80 MV. I decided to remove the crown, a porcelain crown mounted on metal, with the reading of 140 MV first. Upon removal, a fair-sized silver amalgam filling and significant tooth decay was uncovered. Upon examination, the inside of the crown was black from corrosion. The dentist explained that eventually, the electrical current would have caused the tooth to corrode through completely. After removing the most problematic crown, the other three emitted lower electrical readings. The dentist explained that apparently the highest one caused the other three to emit higher readings as well. The three crowns still emit readings high enough to cause concern, and my plan is to remove each one and make sure I have no more hidden silver amalgam fillings. I wish I had done the Oral Potential Meter ten years ago because I'm sure having a mouth of metal has affected my health."
Any patient of the clinic can have the Oral Potential Meter done
to assess electrical activity of fillings and crowns. It is only one of our
diagnostic tests aimed to prevent chronic illness. If you are interested, call
the clinic and ask for an appointment to have the Oral Potential Meter done at
your earliest convenience.
How much does it cost?
The Oral Potential Meter fee is an affordable
$45.00.
What else do I need to know regarding dental
health?
The concepts considered by holistic dentists are controversial and complex. We believe that understanding these issues is important for an individual's overall health and we recommend the following books:
Uninformed Consent by Hal Huggins and Thomas Levy
Toxic Metal Syndrome by Casdorph and Walker
The Root Canal Cover Up by George Meinig
These books can be purchased at the Leo J. Bolles Clinic.
