Long-Term Folic Acid Supplementation Improves Cognitive Function in Older Subjects

    Reference:

"Effect of 3-year folic acid supplementation on cognitive function in older adults in the FACIT trial: a randomized, double blind, controlled trial," Durga J, van Boxtel MPJ, et al, The Lancet, 2007; 369: 208-216. (Address: Division of Human Nutrition, Wageningen University, 6700 EV Wageningen, Netherlands. E-Mail: jane.durga@rdls.nestle.com ).

    Summary:

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 818 subjects aged 50-70 years with raised plasma total homocysteine and normal serum vitamin B12 at screening, long-term supplementation with folic acid was found to improve age-related cognitive function. The participants were randomized to receive 800 micrograms/day folic acid or placebo for a period of 3 years. The 3-year change in memory, information processing speed and sensorimotor speed were observed to be significantly better in the folic acid supplemented group, compared to the placebo group. Additionally, plasma total homocysteine concentrations decreased by 26% in the folic acid-supplemented group. Thus, the authors of this study conclude, "We have shown that 3-year folic acid supplementation improves performance on tests that measure information processing speed and memory, domains that are known to decline with age."
