Curcumin Protects Against Gamma-Radiation Induced DNA Damage

    Reference:

"Protective effect of curcumin on gamma-radiation induced DNA damage and lipid peroxidation in cultured human lymphocytes," Srinivasan M, Rajendra Prasad N, Menon VP, Mutat Res, 2006 Sep 12; [Epub ahead of print]. (Address: Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science, Annamalai University, Annamalainagar 608 002, Tamil Nadu, India).

    Summary:

In a study in which cultured human lymphocytes were exposed to gamma radiation which induced toxicity, DNA damage and increased lipid peroxidation, pre-treatment with curcumin - the active agent found in the curry spice, turmeric - was found to protect cells against cellular damage. Three different doses of gamma radiation were used (1, 2, 4Gy). At all 3 doses, DNA damage and lipid peroxidation were induced, with the greatest damage occurring at 4Gy irradiation. Cells were pre-treated with 3 different concentrations of curcumin (1, 5, and 10 mug/ml). The highest dose of curcumin - 10 mug/ml - was found to protect the cells against all 3 levels of radiation-exposed damage. A dose of 5 mug/ml curcumin protected the cells against 1Gy and 2Gy irradiation, and a dose of 1 mug/ml curcumin protected the cells against 1 Gy irradiation. The authors of this study conclude, "…Pretreatment with curcumin gives protection to lymphocytes against gamma-radiation induced cellular damage ."
